Low-Dose Aspirin May Increase Anemia Risk in Older Adults
Taking low-dose (100 mg) aspirin daily for long periods of time appears to increase the risk of anemia in older adults by about 20%, a new study has found. In turn, anemia is associated with increased fatigue, cognitive decline, depressive symptoms, and disabilities in adults over age 65.
These findings came from the Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study that involved over 19,000 older adults who took low-dose aspirin for an average period of 4.5 years.
Apart from its use as a pain-reliever, low doses of aspirin are sometimes recommended by doctors to help prevent a heart attack or stroke. However, previous ASPREE research has shown that aspirin does not decrease the risk of cognitive decline or dementia and does not increase the lifespan of older adults.
Researchers involved in the study recommend that people aged 65 and older who must take low-dose aspirin should have their red blood cell count and hemoglobin monitored periodically.
Regular Exercise Can Improve Your Gut Microbiome
Being physically active for more than 150 minutes a week can increase both the richness and diversity of gut microbiota, according to recent research. Notably, how long the exercise lasted was more important for improving the gut microbiome than the intensity of the exercise.
The study built off previous research showing that the gut microbiomes of athletes are very different from sedentary individuals. It examined health data from a large group of middle-aged adults, including body weight and diet, as well as information on exercise type, time, and intensity.
When comparing microbiome differences between study participants, the researchers noted that exercise improved gut microbes across the board, but more benefits were seen for those of normal weight compared to those who were overweight.
This led the researchers to recommend exercising regularly (at least 150 minutes a week) but also to maintain a healthy weight by eating a good diet because “poor dietary habits outweigh some of the beneficial influences of exercise on the gut microbes.”
